Key takeaway: A molded pallet is a single-piece, nail-free pallet pressed from wood chips, shavings, rice husk and other agricultural or forestry residues under high temperature and pressure — and because that heat sterilizes the material, it can be shipped overseas without fumigation or heat treatment.
At a glance
- Also known as: molded wood pallet, presswood pallet, compressed wood pallet, fumigation-free molded pallet.
- Raw material: wood chips, planer shavings, rice husk, bamboo and wood offcuts — recycled agricultural and forestry residues, no logs felled.
- Process: crushing → screening → drying → resin application → one-piece hot pressing. No assembly, no nailing, no joints.
- Moisture content: 6%–8%, far below conventional solid-wood pallets.
- Export status: heat-sterilized during pressing, no live insect eggs, supplied as fumigation-exempt for cross-border shipment.
- Where it fits: warehouse turnover, export sea freight, container loading, and in-plant material handling.
Why conventional pallets fall short
In warehousing, export shipping, industrial production and cargo transfer, the pallet is the basic load-carrying platform: it holds the goods, works with the forklift, stacks in storage and fills the container. The traditional options each carry a known penalty.
Solid-wood pallets absorb moisture, mould, split and harbour insects, and they have to be fumigated before they can be exported — extra cost, extra paperwork, and a real risk of missing the vessel. Plastic pallets sidestep quarantine but cost more per unit, turn brittle at low temperatures and lose load capacity as they age. Plywood pallets sit in between, but the glued layers delaminate and crack under repeated load.
Molded pallets were developed specifically to close that gap: compliant like plastic, priced and handled like wood.
What a molded pallet actually is
A molded pallet is a one-piece recycled-wood logistics pallet. The raw material — wood chips, shavings, rice husk, bamboo and wood offcuts — is crushed, screened, dried, blended with resin, and then cured into a finished pallet in a single high-temperature, high-pressure pressing cycle.
Because the whole pallet is formed in one shot, there is no cutting-and-assembly stage and no multi-layer gluing stage. The result has no seams, no joints, no nails and no surface veneer that can peel away. Its structural integrity comes from the shape of the moulding itself, not from fasteners.
Raw materials: agricultural and forestry residues
The feedstock is what the industry calls the “three residues” of agriculture and forestry: wood chips, planer shavings, rice husk, and bamboo or timber offcuts. Nothing in a molded pallet comes from felled logs.
That single fact drives most of the product’s advantages. It keeps the material cost stable and low, it makes the pallet a recycled product rather than a forest product, and it means the finished pallet qualifies for the environmental and energy-saving requirements that many factories and export customers now have to document.
The manufacturing process, step by step
- Crushing. Residue material is broken down into a uniform chip.
- Screening. Oversized pieces and fines are removed so the mat density stays consistent.
- Drying. Moisture is driven down to the target level before resin is applied.
- Resin application. An environmentally compliant adhesive is blended through the material.
- Hot pressing. The material is loaded into a mould and cured under high temperature and high pressure in one cycle. Fibre and resin set together into a dense, homogeneous panel.
- Demoulding. The pallet leaves the press as a finished, single-piece unit — no assembly required.
What that process delivers
A monocoque structure. No seams, no joints, no nails and no delamination risk. Internal density is uniform, so the pallet behaves the same in every direction instead of failing at its fasteners.
Very low moisture content. Finished pallets sit at 6%–8%, well below ordinary wooden pallets. Low moisture is what removes the classic wood-pallet failure modes: moisture pickup, warping, mould growth, insect damage and rot.
Built-in sterilization. The press cycle runs hot enough to kill insect eggs and pests. The pallet therefore needs no fumigation and no heat treatment before shipment, and is supplied with the manufacturer’s compliance documentation for international plant quarantine — which is precisely why it has become the default pallet for export cargo.
A recycled, recyclable input. All raw material is reclaimed residue, so there is no logging involved. Spent pallets can be crushed and re-used, leaving no solid-waste burden and helping a plant meet its environmental targets.
FAQ
Is a “molded pallet” the same thing as a presswood or compressed wood pallet? Yes. Molded wood pallet, presswood pallet and compressed wood pallet refer to the same product family: a one-piece pallet hot-pressed from wood and agricultural residue. Buyers will also see the term “fumigation-free molded pallet” in export contexts.
Does a molded pallet need fumigation before export? No. High-temperature pressing sterilizes the material and leaves no live insect eggs, so no fumigation or heat treatment is required at shipment. In practice you should still ask your supplier for their compliance documentation before the container is booked.
Why does 6%–8% moisture content matter? Moisture is the root cause of most wood-pallet failures. At 6%–8%, molded pallets do not pick up moisture, warp or swell, they resist mould in humid warehouses and during sea freight, and they hold dimensional accuracy through repeated use.
Are molded pallets environmentally friendly? Yes, on two counts. The raw material is 100% recycled agricultural and forestry residue with no logs felled, and end-of-life pallets can be crushed and re-used instead of being landfilled.
Are molded pallets cheaper than plastic pallets? Unit price is lower than a new plastic pallet or a high-grade hardwood pallet, while performance exceeds a standard plywood pallet. Because molded pallets rarely need repair, painting or anti-corrosion treatment, total cost over the pallet’s service life is lower still.
